How does the automatic axle lift system work?

How the axle lift mechanism works on vehicles with an additional axle.

Vehicles that have undergone an additional axle conversion are fitted with an axle lift mechanism so that the additional axle can be raised off the ground when required. The mechanism in our Mercedes Atego additional axle conversion is operated by 2 buttons on the dashboard in the cab, which lower and raise the axle.

System features

  • The vehicle is equipped with a load- and speed-sensitive, electronically controlled axle lift system.
  • To activate the system, simply press the automatic axle lift button.
  • When the vehicle is laden and travelling below 30 km/h, the additional axle can be raised to improve traction and manoeuvrability on slippery surfaces.
  • Pressing and holding the manual axle lift button, located right next to the automatic axle lift button, raises the additional axle for a short time.
  • Once the vehicle exceeds 30 km/h, the additional axle will lower automatically, even if the button is held down.

Which applications include it?

Axle lift is part of our Mercedes Atego additional axle and Isuzu additional axle conversions. In our Isuzu catalogue the application is listed under the heading "additional axle, axle lift".

For general information, see our additional axle conversion page.
