Additional Axle Conversion
By fitting an additional axle we increase your vehicle's net payload, and we carry out this modification using the original components used by the vehicle manufacturer.
What is an additional axle conversion?
An additional axle (tag axle) conversion adds a load-bearing axle to the vehicle's chassis. Because the load is spread across more axles, the vehicle's gross vehicle weight and net payload increase.
The ISUZU NPR 3D, ISUZU NQR 3D and ISUZU TORA are the main vehicles on which we carry out additional axle conversions. We also fit an additional axle and extend the chassis on the Mercedes-Benz Atego 1518.
We manufacture the additional axles used in our conversions ourselves. On our additional axles for 17.5" and 19.5" wheel sizes, the bearings, hubs and calipers are the same as those on your vehicle's drive axle, so we stay true to your vehicle's original design.

Why a Teknik Fren additional axle?
Higher payload
A gross vehicle weight of 22,000 kg on the Atego and 21,000 kg on the TORA; a payload of up to 15,600 kg on the TORA.
Original components
Original components used by the vehicle manufacturer; the same bearings, hubs and calipers as the drive axle.
Axle lift
A load- and speed-sensitive, electronically controlled axle lift system.
In-house certification
Tests, engineering documentation and the TSE application are handled by our own authorised engineers.
Which vehicles do we fit with an additional axle?
Dimensions, weights and axle capacities are defined separately for each model. Select your vehicle to see the full technical table.

Kerb weight: the weight including a 75 kg driver, with all fluids and a full fuel tank. The weighbridge tolerance permitted by the highways authority is not included.
Automatic axle lift mechanism
The axle lift mechanism is operated by 2 buttons on the dashboard in the cab, which lower and raise the axle.
- The vehicle is equipped with a load- and speed-sensitive, electronically controlled axle lift system.
- To activate the system, simply press the automatic axle lift button.
- When the vehicle is laden and travelling below 30 km/h, the additional axle can be raised to improve traction and manoeuvrability on slippery surfaces.
- Pressing and holding the manual axle lift button, located right next to the automatic button, raises the additional axle for a short time.
- Once the vehicle exceeds 30 km/h, the additional axle lowers automatically, even if the button is held down.
How is an additional axle conversion carried out?
Our processes are designed to interlock with the vehicle manufacturer's, which means maximum transparency and minimum lead time.
Market and Needs Analysis
We analyse the need against technology, market, regulatory and price criteria and define a realistic solution.
3D CAD Design
Design down to the smallest detail. Using 3D CAD speeds up the transition to series production and minimises design errors.
Risk Analysis
Sustainability, maintenance and after-sales considerations are built into the design, and risks are assessed rigorously.
Prototype and Road Testing
Our dedicated prototype team prepares the vehicle; durability and long-distance road tests are carried out with our GPS-linked test equipment.
Homologation
Tests are carried out with authorised technical services, the engineering documentation (project file) is prepared and an application for certification is submitted to TSE.
Delivery
The new configuration is programmed into the vehicle's ECU using our diagnostic equipment, and the vehicle is handed over.

Ask usThe ISUZU NPR 3D, ISUZU NQR 3D and ISUZU TORA are the main vehicles on which we carry out additional axle conversions. We also fit an additional axle and extend the chassis on the Mercedes-Benz Atego 1518.
The technical units affected by the modification are tested together with authorised technical services and the test reports are obtained. The engineering documentation (project file) for the vehicle is prepared and an application for certification is submitted to TSE. All of these steps are carried out by our authorised in-house engineers.
We manufacture additional axles for 17.5" and 19.5" wheel sizes: 17.5" with disc or drum brakes, 19.5" with disc brakes.
